Obituary for Akiyo Gibbs (Toriyama)
Akiyo Gibbs, age 82, of New Baden died Sunday, November 21st at 2:25pm at Clinton Manor Living Center in New Baden, IL.
She was born January 14th, 1939 in Japan, the daughter of the late Motomitsu and Yae Toriyama. She married Danny Gibbs who preceded her in death on February 26th, 2019.
Surviving are her four daughters: Angela (Don) Greco of Mascoutah, IL, Andrea Patkus of Litchfield, IL, Tia (Wes) Chilson of New Baden, IL and Alisa (Rich) Pitts of New Baden, IL; three grandchildren Morgan (Ryan) Barker, Aidan and Adysen Pitts; one great grandchild Mackenzie Barker; two sisters Ikuyo Yokota and Kazuko Tanaka both living in Japan; her cousin Sumie Williams of Amarillo, TX, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Mamoru Toriyama and sister-in-law Faye Greer.
Akiyo met Danny while he was stationed in Japan during his time in the Army and there they got married and started their family. She became a US citizen in 1983. She was a homemaker and had various jobs. She was Buddhist and a member of SGI and loved to spend time with the other members who became close friends to her.
A celebration of life will be held January 15th, 2022 at 3pm at the New Baden American Legion.
She will be buried in a private ceremony with her husband Danny at Jefferson Barracks.
