Obituary for Betty Atkinson (Rodgers)

Betty Atkinson, age 88, of Cahokia Heights, IL, died at 11:42 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2022 at her residence.

She was born July 30, 1934 in East St. Louis, Illinois, the daughter of the late Windfield and Lula (Lowe) Rodgers. She married Robert V. Atkinson, Sr. on August 19, 1950, in Bentonville, Arkansas. They had six children.

Surviving are four children: Peggy (James) Sartin of Bradenton, FL, Sandra (the late Richard) Groves of St. Louis, MO, Robin (Kevin) Hake of Hazelwood, MO and Carolyn Atkinson of Bradenton, FL; five grandchildren: Richard (Olivia) Groves, Brandon (Cassandra) Groves, and Jeremy (Jennifer) Groves, Kyle Dixon, and Lynlee (Eli) Zwick; fourteen great-grandchildren: Austin, Patrick, Ethan, Derek, Connor, Carissa, Collin, Michaela, Daniel, and Sawyer Groves, Kyla Swearingen, Anna Campbell, and Alexander Koelz and Emma Gagne; three great-great-grandchildren: Tate Swearingen, MacGyver Groves, and Luna Pedroley; and one son-in-law, Andrew Dixon.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two children: Robert Atkinson, Jr. and Lonnie Dixon; a grandson, Kaleb Dixon; and three siblings: Harold Rodgers, Rev. Charles Rodgers and David Rodgers.

Betty was a life-long member of Grace Church in Fairview Heights, where she belonged to the XYZ Club and was a member of the Senior Citizens club of Cahokia. She volunteered her time at Touchette Hospital in Centreville, enjoyed reading, and watching Christian television.

According to her wishes, her remains will be cremated.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Grace Church, 5151 N. Illinois St., Fairview Heights, IL.
