Obituary for Karen Ann Albrecht (Bardelmeier)

Karen Ann Albrecht, nee Bardelmeier, passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, November 19, 2018, in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

Karen was born on February 28, 1951 in Alton, Illinois, the eldest child of J.M. “Boob” and Doris “Dodie” (Fink) Bardelmeier, who both preceded her in death in spring 2000. An infant sister, Janet Marie Bardelmeier, also preceded her in death, as did her paternal grandparents, John H. and Tillie (Ohm) Bardelmeier, and her maternal grandparents, Dr. LeRoy M. and Gladys (Rissi) Fink.

Surviving are her loving sisters, Patricia Schuetzenhofer (Gerard) of Edwardsville and Joan O’Saben (Thomas) of Glen Carbon; nephews Benjamin Schuetzenhofer (Arielle) of Arlington Heights, IL and Connor Hannon (fiancée Erin Matheney) of Columbus, OH; nieces Anna Schuetzenhofer of Edwardsville, IL and Julia Hannon of Glen Carbon, IL; aunts, uncle and cousins, including a beloved cousin/friend/confidante Mary (Bennett) Voss (Michael) of Maryville, IL; and her longtime companion, Labrador retriever mix, Max.

Karen earned graduate coursework credit in Forensic Pathology from St. Louis University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from St. Louis University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Barat College of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, IL. She was a 1969 Edwardsville High School graduate. During her lengthy professional medical career, until early 2018, she worked in various hospitals and medical centers in Missouri and Illinois. Karen was meticulous about her work and thoroughly enjoyed mentoring younger generations during hospital onboarding, training and internships.

Karen loved sewing/knitting, gardening, card games, reading, movies, puzzles and cooking/baking. She had a wry sense of humor. She was thoughtful to a fault, and she had an uncommon compassion and generosity for those who were down on their luck.

There will be no visitation, and funeral services are private for the family at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery Chapel inEdwardsville, Illinois, where she will be interred. Kalmer Memorial Services in Lebanon, Illinois is handling final arrangements. An early spring celebration of Karen’s life legacy is planned in 2019, on or near her birth date.

Karen’s sisters would like to thank Eden Village Care Center and Unity Hospice for the attention and care both provided to Karen during her final days.

Memorials are suggested to the Edwardsville Community Foundation – Karen Bardelmeier Albrecht Medical Technology Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 102 in Edwardsville, IL 62025, or to the Warren Billhartz Cancer Center at 2227 Vadalabene Drive in Maryville, IL 62062.
