Obituary for Lester H. Winter

Winter, Lester, age 79, of O’Fallon, IL, passed into rest on Aug 5, 2015 surrounded by family at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Born on Nov 8, 1935 in East Saint Louis, IL, the loving son of Oscar L. & Gladys (Lloyd) Winter.
Lester attended Belleville Township HS and was a scholar athlete. Attended Belleville Area Junior College, continued on to earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at University of Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy at Rolla in 1958. Then he earned his PE certification. He served the United States Navy Reserve from ‘59-’67.
He was a longtime resident of O’Fallon, IL where he lived with his wife of 57 years, Susan. Lester had a successful career as a professional civil engineer, predominantly with IDOT and as a partner at Thompson, Winter, and Assoc. and finally as assistant city engineer for O’Fallon. He was very active in the community. He supported the United Church of Christ both in Belleville & O’Fallon serving on their consistories and lending his skills as a project engineer. In addition he was active on the Belleville Rotary Club Transportation committee, O’Fallon Rotary, O’Fallon Planning Commission, Illinois Consulting Engineering Council, American Legion, Life-time member of IL Assoc. of Professional Engineers & IL Highway Engineers.
Lester was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister Martha (Winter) Winzeler.
He is survived by his wife Susan (Mings) Winter. Daughters Leslie (Mark) Voetter of Kirkwood, MO, Julia (Eliot) Mason of Portland, OR, and Laura (John) Wimmer of St. Louis, MO. Grandchildren Shane, Alex, Sophia, and Annabelle. God-children Edward Jones and AnnaLee Ekstrand.
Visitation: A memorial visitation will be Saturday August 15, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the celebration of Lester's life at 11:00a.m. at O’Fallon United Church of Christ, 206 W. Adams St., O'Fallon, IL 62269. Rev. Martha Thierheimer officiating. In lieu of flowers please remember the O’Fallon United Church of Christ and the Hospice of Southern Illinois.
