Obituary for Marla E. Schweikhart (Sams)
Marla Ellen Schweikhart (nee Sams) passed away peacefully on The 3rd of March 2019 leaving behind her loving family: Ashley, Joseph, Laura, Halle and Geoff, her son in law and her grandchildren: Cyrus, Jaden, Richard Jaxon and Trey.
Marla was a proud wife of Lt. Col Richard George Schweikhart ( ret ) who served 28 years in the United States Air Force. Lt. Col Schweikhart was a navigator on the AC 130 and a member of the 16th Special Operations Squadron “ Spectre “ stationed at Hurlburt Field, Florida. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served 2 tours of duty.
Born in Morrow, Ohio in 1940 to Oscar and Betty Sams, Marla grew up on a farm in a very large family with 5 brothers and 4 sisters: Ben, Marilyn, Cindy, Jerry, Cheryl, Richard ( Butch ), Pam, Alan and Peter. It is through her upbringing that one of her greatest passions was gardening or as she put it “ Putting my hands in the dirt.” Marla took the time to pass on her secrets of making her garden bloom and producing delicious home grown vegetables to her children.
Another passion of hers was the game of Euchre. As siblings, many found memories were spent at the farm watching her father, Oscar, shoot the moon with an Ace, Jack and a few small trump. Our goal, as apprentice euchre players, was to make it to the “ table in the kitchen “ where all our mentors took turns trying to “ euchre “ their father. Our gracious host, Betty, always had a delicious meal and snacks for the children as she would talk and listen and watch the proceedings that where unfolding at her table.
Mom was an avid reader. Her children could always find her engrossed in a novel at her desk, her rocking chair or the kitchen table were there where some fierce euchre games as well. She passed on her love for reading to her children introducing many great authors to each of us.
As a grandmother of four boys, mom always had time to participate in the joys of fishing, watching the boys swim and run around the back yard, nerf guns in hand sometimes joining in the fray. Her love of cards extended to the boys as she would play “ go fish “ and “memory match” with her grandsons. Occasionally there was an indoor kickball game that resulted in a few broken lamps or other assorted items. Of course, it was all in great fun and many laughs were had when such accidents occurred.
Always supportive of her children while dad was TDY ( deployed ), mom could be found driving her children to all their extra curricular activities. Be it piano lessons, choir practice ( at church and school), band practice, flag Corp, ballet, tap and dance class, basketball, track and field, tee ball, baseball and football, mom was always there with kind words on encouragement. In her eyes, we could do no wrong. We are four of the most grateful and proud children to have the honor of calling her mother.
Although she rests with God in heaven, She will be missed. Mom may have left us here on this earthly plane, but she will continue to live on through her children and grandchildren.
