Obituary for Mary J. Sand (Arnold)
Mary J. Sand, age 89, of Granite City, IL, died at 3:25 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2020 at Stearns Nursing and Rehab in Granite City.
She was born August 10, 1930 in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Theisen) Arnold. She married Dr. Gregory Sand in Omaha, NE. He preceded her in death March 22, 2013.
Mrs. Sand is survived by three children: Christopher Sand of Granite City, Rachel (Leonard) Petroff of Caseyville and Thomas (Debbie) Sand of Collinsville; two grandchildren: Katie Sand and Shane Sand; and two siblings: Betty Lahr and Ralph Arnold, both of Minnesota.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Sand.
Mrs. Sand received her bachelor’s amd master’s degrees in Nursing from Creighton University, where she met her future husband. In addition to teaching nursing, she was a Nursing Supervisor at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.
According to her wishes, her remains will be cremated and interred next to her husband at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Glen Carbon.
