Obituary for Richard A. Kamm

Richard A. Kamm, age 84, of Lebanon, passed away at 9:27 p.m. Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle, IL after several years of declining health.

Richard was born August 10, 1938, in Lebanon, the son of the late Casper and Hannah (Goehner) Kamm. He was married to Bernice Barbee, who preceded him in death. Both were students at SIU Carbondale where they met, were subsequently married, and received their degrees. Upon graduation, they both became teachers in Lebanon until retirement.

Surviving are three children: Michael (Jeri) Kamm of Lakewood, CA; Douglas (Teresa) Kamm of Middleburg, FL; and Laura Kamm of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles (Lynn) Kamm of Lebanon.

At home, they raised us with love. Since they were teachers, we all had long summers together. We did car trips during the summers all over the US where we saw historical monuments, scientific sites, and visited his brother’s families in Colorado and Washington state. Camping and fishing were always included on those trips. Dad thought the “K” in KOA stood for Kamm.

Richard spent many happy years with Bernice following their retirement. They followed the Cardinals to Spring Training in Florida every season. They traveled to England on several occasions touring the country with their neighbor, Hannah, as their tour guide, and spent time with his brother Ralph and his family at their second home in Hawaii.

Richard was preceded in death by two brothers: Ralph and Bob Kamm.

We will miss him deeply but are comforted in knowing he and mom are together again. A private, graveside ceremony will be held at a later date.

Since Richard, Bernice, and many other family members were/are teachers, his family asks that you donate to the St. Paul United Church of Christ Scholarship Fund located at the link below in lieu of flowers or other gifts.
