Obituary for Stephen A. Wegner
Stephen A. Wegner, age 50, of Collinsville, died Saturday, August 29th, 2021 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, surrounded by his close family and many others in spirit.
He was born July 6, 1971 in Chicago Heights, IL, the son of the late Kenneth Wegner and Nancy Hanson, and stepson of the late Edward Hanson. Steve is survived by his mother, Nancy Hanson of Edwardsville, IL, loving daughter, Kayla Wegner of Collinsville, and his grandson Darius “Moose” Vecchetti; ex-wife Melissa Canada of Overland, MO; six siblings: Phillip (Susan) Wegner of Gainesville, FL, Paul (Monica) Wegner of Atlanta, GA, Cynthia Morgan of O’Fallon, IL, Christine (Randal) Gee of Oxnard, CA, David (Cheryl) Wegner of Edwardsville, IL, and Daniel (Donna) Wegner of Maryville, IL; and a step-brother, Eric (Cathy) Hanson of Myersville, MD.
Steve graduated from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, and was previously employed at Amstead Industries in Granite City, and Louer Facility Planning in Edwardsville/Collinsville. Steve was a fiercely loyal father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend. He had an infectious smile and a sense of humor that endured until the end. He spent as much time as he could with his daughter and grandson Moose. Steve loved fishing and golf, and took every opportunity to enjoy these activities solo or with his friends and family. He was an avid sports fan, and enthusiastically rooted for the Florida Gators, Duke Blue Devils, LA Kings, and enjoyed playing fantasy football. Steve also loved music, in particular Metallica, Linkin Park, and some old school rap from his Cali days. Steve made friends where ever he went, and seemed to be everyone’s best friend. He was always the life of the party, and will be deeply missed by his large family and many others whose lives he touched.
We will have an informal memorial gathering from 4-6 pm on Thursday, September 2nd at the Edwardsville Knights of Columbus, 7132 Marine Rd. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 3:30 pm on Friday, September 3rd, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville with the Very Reverend Jeff Goeckner officiating.
