Obituary for Tommy Dean Vass

Tommy Dean Vass, age 72, of Beckley, West Virginia, died Friday, June 7, 2019 at his daughter’s residence in Shiloh, IL.

He was born December 4, 1946 in Beckley, West Virginia, the son of the late Luther Rice Vass (PFC, U.S. Army, WWI) and Eveleno Berry Vass.

Tommy left West Virginia to work in Washington, D.C. at the age of 17. He started his 40 year career at historic Bassin’s Restaurant, the first sidewalk café near the corner of 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, between Ford’s Theater and the White House. He retired from Kaempfer Co, a large real estate developer overseeing the D.C. area.

Tommy enjoyed catching up with friends at Kelly’s Korner in Pax, WV (a.k.a. the Corner Gas ‘n Grill), fishing with his nephew Jamie, spending time at his home on Vass Branch, and gardening.

He is preceded in death by all five of his siblings: Earnest Dolan Vass, Jack Delano Vass, Roy Denver Vass, Larry Dennis Vass and Ina Mae Bowyer Vass.

Tommy is survived by four children: Kelli (Bill) Sattler of Pasadena, MD, Lisa (Andy) Resch of Shiloh, IL, Florita (Alice) Bougie of Lake Anna, VA, and Susanna (Matt) Samuelson of Olympia, WA; five grandchildren: Rachel (Sattler) Watts, Aaron McLean, Jenna Sattler, Gerald Cassel and Laura McLean.
