Obituary for Zelda Mae "Zee" Starr (Coffell)

Zelda Mae “Zee” Starr, nee Coffell, age 79 of Shiloh, IL, born September 4, 1943 in Peach Orchard, ARK, died April 18, 2023 at her residence.

Zelda was baptized into the Pentecostal Church. She graduated from Deleplaine High School in Deleplaine, Ark. At age seventeen, she was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank, and later Price Waterhouse in St. Louis, MO. She worked for over twenty-five years in the business world: banking, bookkeeping, accounting and taxes. She pursued her love of art for many years creating works of art in watercolors, oil and handmade paper. She belonged to the Gateway East Artist Guild and the St. Louis Artist Guild for many years. She served as Treasurer for the Gateway East Artist Guild for almost a decade. She was juried into the Salute of the Masters in Fairview Heights for many years. Zelda was an avid golfer and belonged to the Ladies Golf League. She and her husband, Jim played in the Friday Night Couples’ League at Tamarack. They also competed in many couples’ tournaments throughout the area. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens and enjoyed all of nature’s beauty. She enjoyed many years at the Lake of the Ozarks house with family and friends whom she loved and cared for.

Zelda was preceded in death by her father, Robert E. and mother, Clara M., nee Kepner, Coffell; five brothers: Lloyd, Robert, Thaddeus, Richard and Newell Coffell; two sisters: Mildred Browdy and Wanda Bass; five brothers-in-law: Glenn Bass, William Browdy, Robert Starr, James Rockwell and James Gill; four sisters-in-law: Irma Coffell, Donna Coffell, Mabel Starr and Arlene Rockwell; three nieces: Willianna Boor, Yvonne Indicott and Tonyia Hatfield; and three nephews: Danny Coffell, Michael Coffell and James Browdy.
She is survived by her husband, James J. Starr; three sisters-in-law: Alma Lois Coffell of Troy, MO, Carol Gill of Bloomdale, OH and Janice Starr of Belleville, IL; and many generations of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Zelda’s wishes were to be cremated. In lieu of a memorial service, a Celebration of Life (casual) will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Cutters Restaurant and Bar, 239 Carlyle Ave, Belleville, IL.
