Obituary for Alfred T. "Shorty" Santel

Alfred T. "Shorty"  Santel
Alfred “Shorty” Santel, age 78, of Damiansville, died at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Cedar Ridge Care Center in Lebanon. He was born March 27, 1935 in Damiansville, the son of the late Clemens and Sarah (Linnemann) Santel. He married Janet Schrage February 6, 1970. She survives. Also surviving are four children: Zina (Bob) Maurer of Alhambra, Douglas (Joni) Dorff of Carlyle, Jolene (Gary) Meyer of New Baden and Tammy (Ed) Vosholler of Troy; ten grandchildren: Brooke, Erica, and Ryan Maurer, Elyse, Evan and Ethan Dorff, Hannah and Haley Meyer, and Connor and Tanner Vosholler; five brothers and sisters: Robert (Ellarine) Santel of Damiansville, Delores (the late Jerome) Varel of Bartelso, Bernadine (Ralph) Koopman of Damiansville, Ollie (Esther) Santel of Iowa and Diane (Gene) Masterson of Damiansville; and a sister-in-law, Joan (Maurice) Fiedler.

Mr. Santel was a union laborer with Mascoutah Local 742 and a farmer. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War, and was a member of Albers American Legion Post 1026, St. Damian's Catholic Church in Damiansville and the Holy Name Men's Society. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, trapping and working in his garden.

Private funeral services will be held at Kalmer Memorial Services in Lebanon. Burial will be at St. Damian's Cemetery in Damiansville. Memorial contributions may be given to the Siteman Cancer Center or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
