Obituary for Gregory William Sand PhD

Dr. Gregory W. Sand, age 77, of Granite City, died at 7:02 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2013 at Relaise Bonne Eau Hospice Home in Edwardsville. He was born October 22, 1935 in Newark, New Jersey, the son of the late John F. and Marie (Gallagher) Sand. He married Mary Jane (Arnold) Sand in Omaha, NE. She survives.

Also surviving are three children: Christopher Sand of Granite City, IL, Rachel (Leonard) Petroff of Caseyville and Thomas (Debbie) Sand of Collinsville; two grandchildren: Katie Sand and Shane Sand; one brother, Allen Sand of New Jersey; and a niece, Kathy of Florida.

He was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Carol Sand; and two nieces: Ellen and Beth.

Dr. Sand was a Professor of History at Webster University in St. Louis. He also taught at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville and St. Louis University, among others. He received his bachelor's degree from Seaton Hall, his master's degree from Creighton and his doctorate from St. Louis University. He was a published author of three books and was a member of Church of the Little Flowers in Richmond Heights, MO.

According to his wishes, his remains will be cremated and there will be no service.
