Obituary for Harley H. Pearson

Harley H. Pearson
Harley Howard Pearson, age 78, of Edwardsville, formerly of Clay County, Illinois, died at 3:47 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Relais Bonne Eau Hospice Home in Edwardsville. He was born June 15, 1934 in Oskaloosa Illinois (Clay County), the son of the late Howard Arthur and Lillian Naomi (Hockman) Pearson. Harley married Dollie Katherine Thompson May 5, 1957 at the Red Brush Christian Church in Clay County, Illinois. She survives. Also surviving are three children: Katherine Ann Pearson-Gardner of Lexington, Kentucky, Randall Scott Pearson of Edwardsville, and Kary Alyce Pearson-Dudley of Yukon, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren and one brother, Donnie M. Pearson of Tyler, Texas. Besides his parents, Harley was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Jean Shields.
Mr. Pearson was a veteran of the US Army where he served in the 82nd Airborne out of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. During his military career, Harley spent a considerable amount of time over seas (in both Germany and Korea). While Mr. Pearson (an Army Communications Specialist) took pride in his fluency with Morse Code, he was equally proud of achieving the classification of Master Marksman (Pistol) in 1964. Following his career in the military, Mr. Pearson worked for Texaco Oil Company and retired from Phillips 66 in 2001.
Mr. Pearson had a passion for music. He was a banjo player and sang baritone in several quartets. However, it was his harmonica playing that brought smiles to so many. Beyond music, Harley’s other hobbies included baking, pencil drawing, woodworking, his short-wave radio, and so much more. While these hobbies were central to who he was, it was his family that was central in his life. His eternal love for his wife was positively without question and his pride in his children and grandchildren a perpetual theme of almost every conversation. The fact is, the void he leaves cannot be filled. It will simply serve as a reminder to us all of how extraordinary he was as a man, a father, and a husband. He will be missed by so many.
According to his wishes, Mr. Pearson’s remains will be cremated and a private memorial service held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the Alzheimers Association.
