Obituary for John W. ""Jack"" Leitner

John W. ""Jack"" Leitner
John “Jack” Walter Leitner of Edwardsville entered into rest at his home on April 27, 2010 at 2:00 PM. Jack was born on August 24, 1956 in Alton, to Walter and Marilyn Leitner, both of whom survive in Edwardsville. Jack married Marian Varel on August 14, 1982. Jack’s interest in boating, classic cars and aviation developed into an enjoyable hobby for his family. He restored many classic cars; the most recent being a 1955 Thunderbird for his daughter. Jack’s interest in aviation took him across the country; his family never flew commercial, as there was no need. In fact, short day and weekend trips were often taken just to visit a restaurant or attend a friend’s birthday party. The aviation bug rubbed off on his son and he couldn’t have been more proud when his son received his pilot’s license. He was so dedicated to aviation that he flew over 100 flights for the Young Eagle’s Program. He was also a member of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association), and the International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local #295, where he completed 4 years of apprentice school. Helping others also became a vital aspect of Jack’s life when he traveled to Haiti for missionary work. By trade, Jack was an accomplished and well-known contractor in the Edwardsville area, often joined by his sidekick and notorious rescue dog, Bo. When building custom homes, it wasn’t unusual to see Jack and Bo enjoying the weather and shooting the bull. Jack reveled in the fact that he didn’t spend a dime in advertising for Jack Leitner Construction; instead all business came through word of mouth and repeat customers.
Jack is survived by his wife Marian (Varel) of Edwardsville; son Jay of Haltom City, TX; daughter Lacey of Edwardsville, his dog Isabelle; his parents of Edwardsville; sisters Janet Novosad of Edwardsville and Sally Jo (Craig Watson) Leitner of Cortez, CO; his father-in-law, Leo Varel of Carlyle; and many wonderful friends. He is preceded in death by his mother-in-law Marcella Varel; sister-in-law Janice Buehne; grandparents Louis & Luella Leitner and Olin & Rosetta Breve. A private memorial service for family was held at Kalmer Memorial Services in O'Fallon. A public visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m Sunday, May 2, 2010 and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, May 3, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Edwardsville. A Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 3 at the church with Rev. Tom Meyer, Pastor, officiating. Memorial contributions can be made in Jack’s name to the American Brain Tumor Association, masses at St. Mary’s Church and Rockhurst University for his daughter’s education fund.
