John V. "Hans" Santel, age 61, of Carlyle, died at 7:53 a.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his sister's residence in Belleville. He was born November 19, 1951 in Breese, the son of the late Edward and Irene (Huegen) Santel. He is survived by one sister, Pat Voss of Belleville; four brothers: Bruce (Sharon) Santel of Walbridge, OH, Fred (Maxine) Santel, Sr. of Trenton, Larry (Brenda) Santel of Albers, and Eric (friend Tracy Christ) of New Baden; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews, cousins and friends. He is also survived by his beloved pet dog, Patches. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Martin Voss; and a nephew, Brandon Santel.
Mr. Santel worked for the Breese Journal. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the music of Pink Floyd and other classic rock bands, and flying his radio controlled airplane. In addition to those hobbies, he enjoyed dancing, as he was affectionately known as "Dancin' Johnny". He was also a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
A Memorial Visitation will be from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Kalmer Memorial Services, located on Rt. 50 between Lebanon and O'Fallon. According to his wishes, his remains will be cremated. In leiu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the family.
