Obituary

Martha Shirley Jondro, age 91, of Carlyle, passed away at 8:10 a.m. Friday, January 31, 2020 at her residence.
She was born January 20, 1929 in Belleville, IL, the daughter of the late Theophilus and Ruth (Squires) Wilhelm. She married Charles H. Jondro. He preceded her in death July 1, 1998.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Jondro; and a sister, Carol Wilhelm.
Shirley graduated from Belleville Township High School in 1946, and she went on to Monmouth College and Belleville Area College. She graduated with a master’s degree in social work from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1968.
Shirley and Charles married on October 8th, 1949 and subsequently raised five children: Anna Jane (H.O.) Brownback, Charles Mark (Ruth Lyons) Jondro, Susan Carol (Michael) Smith, David Allan (Sandra Rakers) Jondro, and Nancy Ruth (Rick McElroy) Jondro.
The family moved from Belleville to Carlyle in 1972 where Charles continued farming and his home construction business in the winter. Shirley worked full-time for the Illinois Department of Public Aid in E. St. Louis until her retirement in 1979.
Charles and Shirley spent many happy times in Biloxi, Mississippi where she joined the Ocean Springs Art Association and took great pleasure in painting.
Shirley and Charles had a full and rewarding life together and the family has grown to include ten grandchildren and fifteen great- grandchildren. Shirley’s greatest delight was her family.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Case-Halstead Public Library, 571 Franklin Street, Carlyle IL 62231 and/or Immanuel United Church of Christ, 1970 Clinton Street, Carlyle IL 62231.
A celebration of life in honor of Shirley will be held at a later date.
