Obituary for Richard Lee Schaefer

Richard Lee  Schaefer
Richard Lee Schaefer, age 70, of Fairview Heights, IL, died Thursday, October 17, 2013 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville. He was born December 27, 1942 in Lebanon, the son of the late Clifford and Ruth (Burke) Schaefer. He married Rhonda Problys October 10, 1964. She survives. Also surviving are two children: Leslie (Michael) Wendling of Altamont, IL and Richard A. (Sheila) Schaefer of Chicago; four grandchildren: Michele (Brett) Tappendorf of Kahoka, MO, Sarah (Brandon) Stock of Altamont, IL, Christopher (fiance Lindsey Young) Wendling of Farina, IL and Mallory Wendling of Altamont; four great-grandchildren: Andrew and Leah Tappendorf, and Spencer and Silas Stock. He is also survived by a brother, Lee (the late Roxanne) Schaefer of California.

Mr. Schaefer was retired from a 20 year career with the United States Navy. After his retirement, he was self-employed in heating and ventilation services. He was a member of the the Fraternal Order of the Elks and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also an avid golfer.

A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Kalmer Memorial Services, on Rt. 50 between Lebanon and O'Fallon. After the visitation, his remains will be cremated. A memorial service will then be conducted at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.
